Opportunities and support to build skills, find work or volunteering, and take part in learning and community life.
Learning new skills in adulthood
Learning continues throughout life. Many adults with a learning disability choose to take part in learning opportunities that support independence, confidence and personal development.
This might include:
- life skills or independent living skills
- confidence‑building or social skills development
- creative or leisure‑based learning
- supported adult learning programmes
Local opportunities may be available through community learning providers, colleges and third‑sector organisations across Perth and Kinross.
Finding and keeping work
Work can offer purpose, routine, choice and financial independence. Some adults with a learning disability may want support to explore employment or move towards paid work.
Support may include:
- exploring interests and job options
- help with applications, interviews and workplace preparation
- supported employment or work placements
- ongoing support to settle into a role
Employment support in Perth and Kinross may be available through the Employment Support Team, Skills and Employment Support, and organisations such as ENABLE Scotland, which support people with learning disabilities to access and sustain work. You can also access the Employability Network.
Some people may also be interested in roles within health, social care or community services. Information about opportunities within the partnership can be found in Working with us.
Volunteering and meaningful activity
Volunteering can be a meaningful way to build skills, confidence and experience, or to give back to the community.
Opportunities may be available through:
- local voluntary and community organisations
- charities and social enterprises
- community projects and events
Support to explore volunteering opportunities may be available through organisations such as PKAVS (Perth & Kinross Association of Voluntary Service) and other local partners.
Getting involved and having a voice
Being involved in community life is about more than work or learning. Some people choose to get involved through:
- social or interest‑based groups
- peer‑support or user‑led organisations
- community projects or consultation opportunities
User‑led organisations such as PUSH - Community Inclusion Perth support adults with a learning disability to build confidence, connect with others and take an active role in shaping their communities.
Support to take part
Some people may need extra support to access learning, work or community activities. This could include help with travel, communication, confidence‑building or flexible approaches that reflect individual needs.
Where support is needed, Self‑Directed Support can help people choose the type of support that works best for them. Information about requesting support or an assessment is available through Accessing care.
