Helping you move into work.
The Employment Support Team supports people in Perth and Kinross who have a disability or long-term health condition to get into work and stay in work.
We work with people who have a range of needs, including learning disabilities, autism, physical or sensory disabilities, acquired brain injury, and mental health conditions. You can find out more about different types of support through our Support for adults and older people.
If you would like to find paid employment, we can work with you to understand your goals and support you every step of the way.
How we support you
You will be supported by a Supported Employment Practitioner who will meet with you to talk about the type of work you are interested in and agree a plan that suits you.
We can help you to build confidence and develop skills for work, including support with creating a CV, applying for jobs and preparing for interviews. You can also access guidance and tools through Skills Development Scotland, My World of Work, and local opportunities on the Perth and Kinross Council skills and employment support page.
We can support you to gain experience through volunteering or work placements. You can explore local opportunities through Volunteer Scotland, PKAVS, or the Perth and Kinross Employability Network.
When you start work, we can continue to support you through your induction and training, helping you to settle into your role.
Support is tailored to you. Some people need a little support at the start, while others may need ongoing support over a longer period.
Support in work
We offer practical, on-the-job support to help you succeed in your role.
This includes helping you learn tasks step by step, supporting you during induction and training, and working alongside you until you feel confident in your role.
As your confidence grows, support will gradually reduce, but we will continue to check in with you and your employer to make sure things are going well.
You may also be able to access additional support through schemes such as Access to Work, which can help with practical support or adjustments in the workplace.
Support for employers
We work closely with employers across Perth and Kinross to support inclusive workplaces.
If you are an employer, we can support you to recruit and retain employees with disabilities or health conditions. This includes advice on reasonable adjustments, support with induction and training, and ongoing guidance for you and your staff.
You can also find national guidance on inclusive employment through Disability Confident, information on workplace responsibilities in the Equality Act 2010 guidance, and further advice on workplace rights and adjustments through the Public and Commercial Services Union.
Our aim is to make the process simple and supportive for both the employer and the employee.
Independent travel training
We offer independent travel training to help people travel safely and confidently to work or access opportunities in the community.
This includes support with planning journeys, identifying safe routes, improving road safety awareness, and building confidence using public transport. You can find public transport information through Traveline Scotland.
Support is provided on a one-to-one basis and is tailored to the individual. We work alongside people until they feel confident travelling independently.
