Supporting older people with dementia to live active and fulfilling lives
New Rannoch Day Centre provides building-based day opportunities for older people living with dementia. We offer a safe, welcoming and supportive environment where people can take part in meaningful activities, maintain skills, enjoy social connection and continue to be involved in their community.
The centre also provides reassurance and regular breaks for families and carers.
What we aim to provide
Our service is person-centred, flexible and supportive. We aim to:
- promote individual strengths and independence
- support social, physical and mental wellbeing
- offer a wide range of meaningful activities
- help people remain living in their own homes for as long as possible
- involve individuals and carers in decisions about their support
- deliver care in a friendly, safe and welcoming environment
Support is planned around each person's needs, interests and abilities, and is regularly reviewed.
About the centre
New Rannoch is a dementia-friendly day centre designed to provide a calm, comfortable and secure environment. The centre includes a range of small, homely activity rooms, a domestic-style kitchen, dining area and garden spaces.
There is a large enclosed garden with seating areas, summer houses, a greenhouse and raised beds, as well as an internal courtyard garden. These spaces support both relaxation and activities throughout the year.
People can move around the centre and gardens freely, while safety is supported through secure entry and exit arrangements. The centre can support up to 40 people each day.
Activities and opportunities
We offer a varied programme of activities both within the centre and in the wider community. Activities are designed to help people maintain existing interests, try new things, build confidence and enjoy social contact.
Activities may include:
- board games, quizzes and bingo
- arts and crafts
- baking and cooking
- music, dancing and reminiscence activities
- light exercise and sensory activities
- gardening and growing vegetables
- snooker, dominoes and bowling
- walking groups and swimming
- cognitive stimulation activities
We also support people to take part in community opportunities and enjoy visits, performances and seasonal celebrations where possible.
Carer support
New Rannoch also offers support for carers and families. This includes information, advice, workshops, signposting to other services, and opportunities to meet others in similar situations.
There is also a separate carers' lounge within the centre. In some circumstances, support may be available for the person you care for while you attend a workshop or session.
To find out more about carer support, please contact the centre on 01738 474566.
Being involved and having your say
We are committed to continually improving our service and value feedback from people who use the centre, their families and carers.
We gather views in a range of ways, including:
- regular reviews of support
- questionnaires and surveys
- focus groups
- carer workshops
- access to independent advocacy
We want people who use the service and their carers to be involved in shaping how the service develops and how support is provided.
If you would like to share feedback or be involved, please speak to a member of staff.
Staffing and support
The centre is staffed by a team of trained and experienced workers, supported by volunteers, students and others involved in service delivery.
Each person who attends the centre is allocated a key worker. The key worker works closely with the individual and, where appropriate, their family or carer to develop a support plan based on their needs, preferences and outcomes.
Opening hours
- Centre operational: Monday to Friday, 8am to 5pm
- Day opportunities: 9am to 3.30pm
The centre is closed on public holidays and on a small number of staff development days during the year.
Meals and transport
A light lunch is provided, usually including soup, sandwiches and a light dessert. Individual dietary requirements can also be catered for. Tea and coffee are available during the day.
Transport may be available depending on where you live. The centre minibus supports people living in the Perth city area, while volunteer drivers and approved taxi providers may support people in rural areas.
Starting the service
Before starting the service, prospective attendees are invited to visit New Rannoch to look around, meet staff and other people who use the centre, ask questions and decide whether the service is right for them.
Referrals are then progressed through the appropriate social work or access arrangements.
Costs and funding
New Rannoch Day Centre is a chargeable service. You may be required to pay all or part of the cost of attending, depending on your individual circumstances.
Charges are based on:
- How often you attend the centre
- A financial assessment, where required
Your referring social worker will discuss costs with you, offer a financial assessment and provide advice about income maximisation.
For more information about care costs and funding, you can visit Paying for care and free personal care.
Quality and standards
Our service is underpinned by the National Care Standards (Support Services), which set out what you can expect as a minimum from support services, and the Scottish Social Services Council (SSSC) Codes of Practice, which describe the standards of conduct and practice expected of social service workers.
New Rannoch Day Centre is registered, regulated and inspected by the Care Inspectorate. Inspection reports for the service are available on the Care Inspectorate website.
